The system that extracts from you will not save you from extraction. It will sell you the cure for the disease it gave you and call it progress.

If you don't control your food, you don't control anything. Every revolution is backed by food. Every mass strike holds because people brought their own food. Food is the material foundation of every other freedom.

There is no conspiracy. There doesn't need to be one. The system produces outcomes that benefit the people who designed it, and the people who benefit have every incentive to maintain it. No secret meetings required. The structure does the work.

Specialization is the extraction economy's cage. Skill is the key. Every skill you learn is a withdrawal from dependency. Every skill you teach is an investment in community resilience.

Living each day as if we're in a benign energy descent future. Not waiting for the crisis. Not rehearsing the collapse. Building the world we want inside the shell of the world that's ending. A calorie you grow is a dollar that doesn't leave your community. A tool you repair is a subscription you don't pay. A watt you keep is a watt the machine doesn't get to burn on your behalf.

Cities cannot feed themselves. However hard they try, however many rooftop gardens and vertical farms they build, the math of land area versus caloric need does not bend for ambition. The best that cities can hope for in an energy descent future is retro suburbia: all the suburban spaces allocated to food production, to trade between households, along with mutual aid networks for those stuck in the heart of the urban area. A great deal of food can be produced in the city. It will never be enough.

The subsistence farmer is the one lessening harm, not the vegan, and the numbers are clear and undeniable. Industrial agriculture kills more animals per calorie than pastoral farming. The combine harvester does not check for nests. The pesticide does not discriminate. The tractor does not see the field mouse. A diet assembled from ten thousand miles of supply chain, processed in factories, packaged in petroleum, and shipped in refrigerated trucks is not less harmful than a diet grown within walking distance, even if that diet includes eggs and meat.

The idea of having time to be by themselves, or in nature, or without distraction, is so frightening that rather than considering it, they will let advertisers tell them what to buy, let algorithms tell them what to watch, let marketing tell them what to think. We can no longer be a people with almost no control over how we spend our days, managed by people in a boardroom without any concern for our well-being. It is time to reclaim our freedom, which has been taken from us through manipulation and a system of civilization that is doomed to fail.
