Part 6 · Capstone: Design Your Own Subsistence Farm

Submit and Defend

Publish your finished design so other people can check it, answer the strongest critic, and finish the course with no certificate bought or sold.

30 min read

The design is finished when someone else can read it, rebuild it, and try to break it. The tenth deliverable is the finished package, published so others can check it, and a one-page defence of the choices it makes. This is the last lesson, and it closes the course on the two things it promised at the start: you can do something on real ground, and you can say where every idea came from.

What you produce

The design package and a defence. The package is the ten deliverables from the nine lessons before this one, collected into one document: the brief, the survey and sectors, the water plan, the soil ledger, the crop and livestock plan, the calorie ledger, the labour budget and calendar, the cost and fair-price sheets, and the red-team report with the revised design. The defence is a single page that answers the strongest objection a stranger can make.

The exact format

The package, in order, each part numbered and dated:

  1. The brief and its two Varro questions, answered at last.
  2. The survey map and the sector table.
  3. The water budget and the water plan.
  4. The nutrient ledger and the fertility plan.
  5. The crop plan, the rotation grid, and the livestock line.
  6. The calorie ledger and its limiting macronutrient.
  7. The labour budget and the twelve-month calendar.
  8. The cost budget and the surplus sheet.
  9. The red-team table and the revised design.
  10. The one-page defence.

The defence has four headings: what the design does, what it costs, what it cannot do, and where each idea came from. The last heading is the one the course was built around. Name the ancient writer, the study, the neighbour, or the trial that gave you each idea. If you cannot name a source for a choice, that choice is a question to test.

Where the course ends

The course is complete when the design passes its tests, not when a fee is paid and a certificate arrives. There is no certificate. This course sells none and awards none, because a certificate in subsistence farming would be a certificate in doing a thing you can simply go and do. What you keep is the design and the ground it stands on, and the ability to name where every part of it came from. Those two things are the whole credential.

The proof of the design is not the document. It is the first season, the first full store, the first bad year survived. A design holds when the farm holds, and the farm holds by the years. The house design is plain about the end of the work: you will not see the farm finished, because the food forest you plant now will bear its fullest after you are gone, and the soil you build will be richest in hands you will never meet. That is not a loss. It is the thing agriculture has always offered, and it is why the design is written down and handed on rather than kept.

How to publish

Publish the package where a stranger can reach it and answer it. A public web page, a community wiki, the local library, the noticeboard at the market. State that the design is open, that anyone may build from it, and that you want it attacked. Then invite the strongest critic you can find and answer them in public. A design defended only in private is a design that has never been tested.

The test

The package passes when a stranger who has never seen your site could rebuild the design from the document alone. That means consistent units, stated assumptions, and the working shown, because a number no one can check is a number no one should believe. The defence passes when it answers the strongest objection rather than the easiest one, and when it can name the source of every idea. The last test is the one the course set at the door: you can do something on real ground, and you can say where it came from. If both hold, the design is done and the building can start.

Exercise

Stage your own defence

Give the package to one person who has not read it. Ask them to find the three decisions it is least sure of, and to argue against each. Write your answer to their strongest objection on the defence page. If you cannot answer it, the design has a gap, and finding it now is cheaper than finding it in year three.

Fieldwork

Walk a stranger over the design

Walk a visitor who has never seen the place across the whole design, on the ground, in the order the package is written. At each part, the brief, the water, the crops, the store, ask them to name what does not hold up. Note where they get lost and which number they doubt. Bring back the walked tour with their three hardest objections written in their own words.

Failure mode

The failure mode is a design kept private and defended against the easy objection. A package no stranger can read is a package no stranger can break, and an untested design waits to fail in year three at full cost. Publish where anyone can reach and answer it, invite the strongest critic you can find, and let the ground, not the document, prove the design.

The farm's own position, stated here as the course states it throughout: subsistence first, then a fair price for surplus, then a community that can check the work. We publish. We do not sell a certificate, and we do not believe a design is proven by a document. It is proven by ground.
