Lemon balm

A gentle calming herb with real trials, and the best first plant for a nervous beginner's garden. — Melissa officinalis

remedy
Lemon balm Melissa officinalis — hand-drawn plate, stylised. Not for identification — use a field guide and verify with a second source before eating any wild plant.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a vigorous perennial in the mint family with a genuine lemony aroma and randomised trial evidence for both anxiety and sleep quality.

What the trials support. Lemon balm has shown anxiolytic effects in randomised trials, including in acute stress settings, and improvements in sleep quality — often in combination with other calming herbs, which is a limitation worth naming. It is a mild sedative rather than a hypnotic: it does not knock you out, and it is not in the same class as a benzodiazepine.

The topical use is a separate and interesting one. Lemon balm cream has trial evidence for herpes simplex labialis — cold sores — reducing healing time and symptoms. That is an unusual thing for a garden herb to have, and it is specific to lemon balm rather than to mints generally.

It is the best first calming plant to grow. It establishes in one season from a division, tolerates real soil and some shade, spreads enthusiastically, and gives a usable harvest in year one. That combination is rare among the genuinely calming herbs — valerian and passionflower both take longer to establish.

The honest limits. Lemon balm is not a treatment for an anxiety disorder. The behavioural and psychological treatments have stronger evidence, and lemon balm is an adjunct alongside them rather than an alternative.

Growing it

| | | |---|---| | Life | Perennial, herbaceous | | Propagation | Division, or cuttings. Self-seeds readily. | | Light | Full sun to part shade — more tolerant of shade than most herbs | | Soil | Any reasonable soil | | Containment | Essential — spreads like mint | | Harvest | Leaf, before flowering, repeated cuts | | First harvest | The same season | | Dry | Shade, ambient — the aroma is volatile and heat destroys it |

Cut back after flowering to force new leaf. It will self-seed and appear elsewhere; that is usually welcome and occasionally a nuisance. Divide every year or two.

Preparation

Tea — 1-2 teaspoons dried leaf per cup, covered, 5-10 minutes. A pleasant evening tea.

Tincture — fresh or dried leaf in alcohol; the conventional calming preparation.

Cold sore cream — a 1-2% extract cream applied at the first tingle. The trial evidence is for topical use specifically.

Fresh — the leaves are edible and good in salads, drinks and with fruit.

Combining — lemon balm is often blended with chamomile and passionflower for sleep. The trials often use such blends, which means the evidence is for the combination rather than for lemon balm alone.
