A traditional nervine whose safety record is complicated by a case of adulteration. — Scutellaria lateriflora
remedySkullcap Scutellaria lateriflora — hand-drawn plate, stylised. Not for identification — use a field guide and verify with a second source before eating any wild plant.
American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a traditional nervine used for anxiety, tension and sleep, with a small and methodologically weak clinical literature.
The safety story matters more than the evidence. Skullcap's reputation for liver injury comes largely from an episode in which a product labelled skullcap was contaminated with Teucrium (germander) — a genuinely hepatotoxic plant. The confusion between the two persists in labelling, which means the safety of a skullcap product depends on its provenance more than on the plant itself. Growing and identifying your own removes that specific risk.
Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) is a different plant with a different chemistry and a different literature; do not treat the two as interchangeable.
Use it as a mild nervine tea, and be aware that the adulteration history is why some sources call it unsafe.
